Back-to-School Health Planning: Medpac Tips for September

Preparing for a Healthy, Safe Start to the School Year

The start of the school year can feel like a fresh page. New uniforms, sharpened pencils and full lunchboxes signal a return to routine. But for parents of children with medical needs, September brings more than timetables and homework, it also means getting health plans, medication and emergency care instructions in order.

Whether your child is starting school for the first time or returning after the summer, making sure their medical needs are clearly communicated and well managed is essential for their safety and your peace of mind. At Medpac, we know how important that preparation can be, so we’ve pulled together a few practical tips to help you get ready.

Organise Medication Clearly and Accessibly

Every child with medication needs should have a dedicated, clearly labelled container that school staff can recognise and access quickly in an emergency. Medpac was designed with this exact scenario in mind. Our School Medpac are bright, durable and easy to identify in a classroom, staffroom or school bag.

Include the following in your child’s Medpac:

  • All prescribed medication, in original packaging if possible

  • Clear dosage instructions

  • Emergency care plan (if required)

  • Any relevant allergy or condition alert cards

  • Inhalers, EpiPens or other emergency devices where applicable

  • A recent photo of your child for easy identification

Make sure everything is up to date and check expiry dates before sending items into school.

Communicate With the School Early

Ideally, aim to speak with your child’s class teacher and the school’s medical lead before term starts. If your child has a care plan or Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP), bring a printed copy and review it together. It’s also a good time to confirm where medication will be stored and who is trained to administer it.

Be clear about:

  • What your child’s condition is

  • What symptoms to watch for

  • What staff should do in case of emergency

  • Any activity limitations or triggers to avoid

Our Medpac Photo ID Cards and Care Cards can be included inside the Medpac so that important instructions are always with your child’s medication.

Prepare Your Child (and Their Friends)

Depending on your child’s age and understanding, it’s helpful to talk them through what to expect at school. Help them understand when and how to ask for help, who they can speak to, and why they carry their Medpac.

You might also want to:

  • Practise using an inhaler or EpiPen with them

  • Roleplay asking a teacher for help

  • Let close friends know they carry medication and how to respond

This builds confidence and ensures your child isn’t caught off guard if they need support during the day.

Label Everything and Keep It Consistent

It’s easy for things to get lost at school. A brightly coloured Medpac with your child’s name and photo helps ensure it’s returned to the right hands. Use the same Medpac each day so staff learn to recognise it quickly.

Our Medpacs allow you to customise the ID with your child’s name and medical condition for easy visibility.

Starting the school year with a clear health plan and a well-packed Medpac helps set your child up for success and gives you peace of mind. With the right preparation, you can feel confident that their needs are supported, even when you’re not there to help in person.
